Festival of the Lakes

Mark Chandler lead this year’s speaker schedule with his power point presentation showing evidence that there is less phosphorus in Woahink Lake in the last few years.  DEQ water quality educator Jackie Fern praised Dunes City for their proactive programs related to phosphorus and septic system ordinances and being the first in the State of Oregon to write these ordinances.  Frances Klipple, an herbal enthusiast showed how to reduce phosphorus by using natural means.  Slope specialist Jim Barmore with 25 years construction experience informed the festival audience of what they should know when developing property and how to limit slope failure damages.  Dr. Chernaik, a public interest scientist for the last 15 years with Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (eLAW) was this year’s key note speaker.  Dr. Cherniak was pleased to learn the Dunes City Erosion Reduction Ordinance was in place and encouraged the city to stay on tract to finalize the Stormwater Control Ordinance in order to protect the longevity of Dunes City ’s lakes and streams.

The Sponsors for this year’s festival were the Woahink Lake Association and Lane County Commissioner Bill Fleenor.  A pleasant day was had by all who attended.  In Dunes City it’s hard to tell the difference between volunteers and participants, but everyone went home with something whether it was an auction item, a raffle prize or just knowing they shared in a day of stewardship for the lakes.  Thank you to all who participated and helped make this a great community event.
